C01 Worker.
Spyderco Trademark Round Hole.
Spyder Edge
Spyderco.
Tri-Angle Sharpmaker

Spyderco Firsts in the Knife Industry
The Hole
With regards to the innovations of the opening hole, the clipit and serrations on our pocket knife, was more of a step-by-step solution than it was an “aha” experience.  I have always carried a pocket knife all   my life and I have always used them, most often  as one does when carrying a pocket knife you find whether your cutting to opening boxes or just cleaning fingernails you’re using a knife.
When lock backs started to become popular in the 60s, I had learned to open up a knife with one hand by holding the knife handle in my hand and using my thumb to push the blade out into an open position.  This was a very convenient skill but it was a skill that was time consuming to develop.  So, when I created the hole opener in 1980 I was specifically trying to work on a solution that anyone could use to open a knife with one hand.
I started out by adding things to the blade, little things sticking out of the blade, little things stuck on top of the spine something that you could get leverage on to open the blade but they all seemed to provide a downside. They would snag on things. Some of them would make sharpening difficult.  So, then I decided that I would try to do stuff by removing from the blade.  I originally roughed up the edge to try to get more traction and then I eventually created dents that allowed you to use the fleshy part of your thumb to push the blade open.  When we patented the concept we patented the concept of the ledge that was created by a dent or a hole that you could use to open a knife with one hand.   We ended up drilling a hole because the blade is so thin and that worked fine.  We used a round hole because we felt it would be easier on the thumb and it would be identifiable.  We worked with different size holes and different distances from the pivot pin until we ended up with something that we felt anybody could easily learn to do.
The Pocket Clip
The pocket clip was a result of a key ring that I had that was a little frog that stuck out of the pocket with its front legs grabbing the top of the pocket and the keys hung down below that.  The convenience of being able to grab something off the top of your pocket rather than having to dig inside your pocket was a very convenient tool that I thought would work well with a pocket knife, so that you wouldn’t have to lift this heavy piece of metal sitting in the bottom of your pocket and you wouldn’t have to carry a separate sheath attached to your belt or your clothing.  It took a while to develop the original clip because it had to serve a number of functions and even today we are constantly refining and improving clips that we put on our knives.
Serrations on a folding blade
We decided to add serrations because of the advantages of serrations.  We had worked with serrated knives while we were pitching and we realized that they cut more aggressively for a very long time.  They just have not been used on a pocket knife primarily because there was really no easy way to sharpen them.  We built the triangle sharp maker before we decided to make any knives and part of the design goal of the triangle sharp maker was to be able to sharpen serrated edge knives.  So, with that problem solved we decided to try a serrated pocket knife, which we made originally as a model called the Mariner because of the Stainless material used in the blade and the handle and the fact that it would cut through rope more effectively than most knives.  To this day we still use serrations on some of our knives and although we know a lot more about them now than we did 30 years ago they still have some advantages.
The Tri-Angle Sharpmaker
The triangle sharp maker was also created on an almost step-by-step basis.  My wife Gail and I were working as demonstrators in State Fairs and Shows and because of my interest in knives, we started to look into a variety of knife sharpeners that we could demonstrate and sell.  And, after using a variety of different types we decided that the V Rod concept, originally invented by Louie Graves, was a good foundation so we worked with Louie Graves for a while, great man. We used his format which we continued to modify and then with his blessing we invented the triangle sharp maker which incorporated the simplification of sharpening a lot of different kinds of cutting tools, including scissors, serrated knifes, etc.
What we wanted was a tool that would provide professional results that an amateur could achieve without having to plug it in or attach fixtures to the tool.  The triangle sharp maker has also slowly evolved with refinements, now in their fourth variation.  We use ceramic abrasion with a variety of grits as well as diamond abrasives for sharpening just about any type of knife or cutting tool.

Spyderco

Sal Definitions of a Tactical Knife
What is your pure definition of a tactical knife and what should be its functions?
When we first started making one-hand open clip carry folders in 1981, our goal was to create a folding knife that was quickly and easily deployable, to be able to handle situations that needed time saving application.

This could be any type of an emergency like getting tangled in a line, a shoe lace caught, defense against a human or an animal, or any situation where saving time was important. Our focus was on high performance, low maintenance folding knives.
The term “tactical knives” had not yet been coined.
My good friend Bob Terzuola saw some of the advantages of what we were doing, and I think he created and coined the “tactical knife” term when he started making folders where these features could be applied to a military application.
One of the things that we did early on was to create a very aggressive serrated edge, which just added to the function of high performance, quickly deployable folding knives.
What are being called “tactical knives” today that aren’t?
This really isn’t something that I can comment on.  The term has broadened quite a bit, and includes anything that’s black or “mean” looking.  I guess the wordsmiths use the term “tactical knives” as a marketing term.
How have tactical knives evolved since the early 1990s?
In the 1990s we had already been making our knives for more than ten years, but I noticed that as the military application became more and more desired then a number of designers started to create more robust versions of the clip carry one-hand open folders;  Strider started to make the more robust knives that could be used for prying, and gained favor with the military crowd; many people started to use tanto blades;  clips have been added to automatic knives; various materials that have been developed recently, such as corrosion resistant steels like H1 and LC200N, have also added to the variety and advantages of tactical knives.
How do you see tactical knives evolving next year, 5 years from now, and 10 years from now?
I think it’s going to be driven by the market, by innovation and by new materials; even fixed blade knives are now moving into the tactical arena; coatings have become stronger, and the black knives will probably continue to be a part of the tactical knife assortment.  I also see a lot of major divisions in the industry, which are dictated by laws in various countries; locks are becoming prohibited in many countries; size limitations; deployment methods will always restrict the development of knives in the future.
There is also a more radical trend, which is going to larger knives, and  another trend that seems to be affecting the industry is the concept of self-defense, which in some countries its actually illegal, and there are situations where people “carry” illegal knives more out of concern than working function.
